CMFlix was created as a result of the difficulties a Cameroonian tech person, Bobe Chiamba has been facing to get his TV stations distributed all over Cameroon.
CMFlix
is the idea of the shortcoming of cable network in Cameroon. To have your tv
channel distributed effectively in Cameroon, you will need to get it on a
satellite. This process itself is very expensive and you are not guaranteed
people will watch the channel he added. You will have to settle all gatekeepers
who are cable distributors all over the national territory for your tv station
to get in the home of every Cameroonian.
The
major way Cameroonians still consume TV is through cable networks and according
to Chiamba, the system of cable TV operation in Cameroon is very fragmented,
for example in a small town called Buea where his TV channel CMTV is based,
there are over six cable TV distributors and in order to distribute a TV
channel content in a town as Buea, one has to meet, negotiate and pay these
cable distributors before your channel is presented to homes in Buea. Buea is
just a small town in Cameroon and there are many others, hence hundreds of
different cable distributors scattered all around these many towns this means
to have your tv channel effectively distributed in Cameroon, you must locate,
negotiate and pay all these hundreds of cable distributors who are scattered
all over towns and villages in Cameroon.
His
immediate push to move out of his comfort zone and create what will rescue all
tv station managers was the fact that, he was charged a nonrefundable sum of 2
million CFA just for the installation and a monthly fee of between 100 to 150
thousand francs per TV channel per month for his tv stations. Although he has
been paying this sums for some years now, he thinks it is exploitative because
local TV channel we spend so much on content production, bills, running costs,
taxes, just to name a few per month, and cable TV distributors will take these
content and sell to their customers for a fee after forcing station managers to
pay huge distribution charges since there are no other options.
Today
he announces that CMFlix is here to solve your TV Channel or content

and be accepted to operate by your Country’s government before we can accept it
on CMFlix.
Given
that data in Africa is still very expensive, they have built CMFlix to use very
little data when you stream content.
“For
us at CMFlix, the user experience we provide is crucial because most viewers
won’t deal with a poor stream for long. In fact, over half of the viewers will
abandon a poor-quality stream in 90 seconds or less. That means one bad stream
could be devastating for business.”
The
problem is that most users rely on home internet connections. Bandwidth and
network conditions for these connections fluctuate throughout the day and could
impact the viewing experience. The devices they use also vary in processing
power and playback ability.
That’s
why it’s crucial for the team behind CMFlix to keep viewers in mind when
putting together an adaptive video streaming workflow. CMFlix, uses the adaptive
bitrate streaming algorithm to optimize streaming quality hence, giving our
users a better viewing experience.
